"The XY problem is asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem. This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help."

First off, this obfuscation is referring to the DPAN, which is distinct from the FPAN.

Ahem, sorry for the jargon, but it's important to understand what's happening, so let me explain.

The FPAN is the “full primary account number” and it’s the 15-18 digit number printed on your physical card. The DPAN is your “device primary account number”.

Okay, I think I've nailed my principal objection to GPTs masquerading as AI.

To paraphrase Elizabeth Bowen, GPTs produce the stupid person's idea of how smart people write.

Lucid but ponderous prose, loaded with five dollar words, with an absolute sense of conviction.

There's a lot of talk about building critical digital literacy to enable people to disinter embedded bias, and spot AI-speak and fabulation.

But an /aesthetic/ sense is needed here — to detect the stylistic indicia of bullshit.
